In Manhattan, Dwell on Design 2015

Dwell magazine is kicking off its 15th anniversary – in a big way.

Editor-in-Chief Amanda Dameron’s column for the newest issue is a reprise of The Fruit Bowl Manifesto”- the salvo fired by founding editor Karrie Jacobs back in Dwell #1 in October 2000.

Last night the magazine launched Dwell Design Week in Manhattan with a celebratory cocktail party and high hopes for the second year of Dwell on Design New York.

“Last year there were 3,800 design, trade and consumer attendees,” says Whitney Christopher, communications director at Dwell Media. “We anticipate  about 5,000 this year.”

The size of the show has increased too, with two stages, 40 programs and 18 CEU opportunities for attendees. From speakers like Vanity Fair‘s Paul Goldberger and architect Eric Owen Moss to events like “Meet the Architects” and the Dwell Home Tour, it promised to be a never-a-dull-moment event.

“For the week in general, the main thing is to bring the content to our audience in a different way and as an immersive experience,” says Heather Corcoran, senior editor at Dwell Media. “The audience can hear from these game-changers directly.”

“Meet the Architects” enables attendees to talk with designers in the spaces they’ve worked on, ask questions and gain an understanding of how they approached their design challenges.

“It’s an event unlike any other – you get to experience the project from concept to completion, all while standing in the entryway with them,” Corcoran says. “You can understand what the purpose was – whether it was something from the homeowner or site-specific.”

Then there’s the home tour, on Saturday Oct. 3 from 10 AM to 4 PM. Five homes are to be featured this year, from a penthouse on the Upper East Side to a TriBeCa loft.

“The architects are definitely fresh – and they have a following,” she says. “The first thing we look for is the ‘Wow!’ factor.”

But that’s pretty much true for all that Dwell does, isn’t it?
