For A+A’s 10th Anniversary, a Look Back

Since Architects + Artisans was established 10 years ago, we’ve published scads of posts about architecture, artisanship, landscape, and design. Over the next few weeks, we’ll reach back into our archives and select a single post from each year of the past decade – and publish it again. In the meantime, though, we’ve asked a few designers and editors to share their thoughts about this site:

“Mike Welton is a natural writer. The craft of his language is equal to the craft of the buildings and artifacts he writes about. He is the Vasari of the contemporary scene. I read Architects + Artisans as much for the beauty of his prose as I do for the cool things he writes about. He’s the real thing. Mike discovers in each window, each bench and each type of building a unique expression of architecture.”
— Frank Harmon, FAIA, Principal, Frank Harmon Architect, Author: “Native Places: Drawing as a Way to See,” Raleigh, N.C.

“For a landscape architecture and urban design practice, Architects + Artisans is a valuable resource because it features current projects and products that address the hot-button issues that are at the forefront of all design disciplines.”
— Scott Jordan, Principal, Civitas, Denver, Colo.

“Architecture, artisanship and design create the trifecta of what makes our industry so remarkable. Mike writes compelling features that reveal new, original and fascinating work that’s invaluable to the design community.”
— Cean Irminger, Creative Director, New Ravenna, Exmore, Va.

“As a minimalist at heart and a reader of Architects + Artisans, I really appreciate the educational and informative posts that pack the crux of a project or designer into just a few lines of text. I have learned about colleagues and design styles from reading it.”
— John Klopf, Principal, Klopf Architecture, San Francisco, Calif.

My heartiest congratulations to A+A on its 10th anniversary! Here we have ten years of pithy prose about so many important aspects and players in the world of architecture. Mike Welton says more in 300 words than most say in 30 pages. It’s been a joy to include in the newsletter for the last 10 years – here’s to the next 10!
Kristen Richards, Hon. AIA, Hon. ASLA, Editor-in-Chief/Co-Founder, ArchNewsNow.com

“I truly appreciate the way Architects & Artisans keeps us up-to-date on timely design issues. What a treasure! Thank you for 10 years. Here’s to many more.”
—Jim Olson, FAIA, Principal/Owner, Olson Kundig, Seattle, Wash.

“There is something so real and meaningful about what Mike Welton envisions in Architects + Artisans, and the limitless rein he gives himself to find the most unique and beautiful designs. It’s a go-to read for me, and nothing quite compares to the elegant voice and eye-opening content of each and every article.”
—Andre Kikoski, AIA, LEED AP, Principal, Andre Kikoski Architect, New York, N.Y.
