Exactly 10 years ago today, Architects + Artisans launched its first post, about a modern shed for a potter’s kiln in Boone, N.C. Since then, A+A has offered its readers all manner of ideas about architecture, art and design. It’s a sweet gig for this writer, enabling interviews with some of the leading professionals practicing around the world. And they seem to appreciate it:
“Architects + Artisans cuts a broad swath – it gets down in the trenches and then takes us back up to the sky, in both critical and insightful ways. I love that cross-section. It’s a very thoughtful curation of architecture, materials and design – and incredibly well done.”
— Marlon Blackwell, FAIA, Principal, Marlon Blackwell Architects, Fayetteville, Ark., Recipient of the 2020 AIA Gold Medal Award
“The breadth and depth of the topics that Mike Welton covers on Architects + Artisans are essential reading for anyone interested in architecture and design. Created to interest and educate, its impact is undeniable.”
— Suchi Reddy, AIA, Founder & Principal, R E D D Y M A D E, New York, N.Y.
“As an architect with very little spare time, I continue to be grateful for Mike’s ability to curate and illuminate the spirit of design in our time, as well as the particulars – the people, places and products. What elevates Architects + Artisans above so many other digital design sites, in my opinion, is Mike’s clear and compelling prose that I look forward to reading for another 10 years!”
— Arielle Condoret Schechter, AIA, Chapel Hill, N.C.
“What differentiates Architects + Artisans is its independent spirit that allows it to go out, free of agenda or marketers’ influence, and seek content that is different, interesting, noteworthy, and relevant.”
—Amy Meier, Principal, Amy Meier Design, Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
“I met Mike via Skype first and later in person. My artwork had been part of the award-winning interior design for a new hotel, and he was introduced to it by the consulting architect on the project. He made me a Reggae mix tape, and I gave him a piece of art, and we chatted about art and architecture. I read Architects + Artisans because it’s like that – it has the same vibe as hanging out with Mike and talking about architecture, art and design.”
— Shane Aquart, Digital Artist, Grand Cayman Island
“For 10 years, Architects + Artisans has been an important resource for anyone with an interest in the craft of architecture and design. Mike has a keen sense of the elements that make a project meaningful, presented in a way that’s respectful to the spirit of the source.”
— Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, Principal/Owner, Olson Kundig Architects, Seattle, Wash.
