Catherine Synave is a journalist and art historian who’s published “A Home in Paris” (Flammarion, 2015) and contributed to a number of design magazines. Now she’s published a book called “The Parisians: Tastemakers at Home,” with interiors by 25 world-class designers. Its photographs are by Guillaume de Laubier, a lifestyle photographer whose work has been featured in Elle Decor and Vogue. A+A recently interviewed the author via email:
Your background?
It’s in journalism and stylism – freelancing for interior decoration magazines like Maison & Jardin, Marie-Claire Maison, Maison Francaise, and AD France.
The intent of this book?
It’s to question the originality and the singularity of masculine interiors – materials, architecture, colors, furniture, and type of collections – and show how a place reveals the personality of the one who lives in it.
Why publish it now?
Because men are more and more taken care of with fashion, fashion shows, accessories, jewels, cosmetics, barber shops, and smoking lounges.
The scope of the book?
I wanted to get in a one book as many aspects as possible of men’s tastes and singularities.
Its genesis?
It’s based on my experience in working for interior magazines
Its inspiration?
That comes from what we found in those houses and apartments – they decided the way we treated the pictures.
The target audience?
It’s for people curious to see where “Parisians” live, how they decorate their homes, and leave their mark.
The requirements for inclusion in the book?
-Variety, originality, singularity, elegance, reputation – and even fame.
