In Vienna, a Student Competition

In Vienna, Austria, a student architecture competition seeks to link music and nature at a compelling urban site.

The House of Music is to be located at the Stadtpark on Vienna’s historic Ringstrasse.  It’s close to the oldest part of the city, and in the middle of a park along two major avenues, aligned with a small canal.

“The House of Music is a new type of music school for Vienna that should be an important link between past and present,” said Gaston Saboulard of ARCH Medium at the University of Barcelona.  “The building will resolve two separate programs: a music school/conservatory and a new public space related to the park and the city.

The juried competition is open to all undergraduate students studying achitecture, engineering, urban planning, design, and related fields.  Postgraduate students, no more than three years out of undergraduate school, may also participate.  Either individuals or groups can enter, with a maximum six members allowed on each team.

Joseph M. Montaner will preside over the jury, which will include architect Jordi Badía, architect and urbanist Adolf Sotoca, landscape architect Miguel Vidal Pla,choir and orchestra director Lluís Carné, and achitect Laura Spinadel.

The winning entry will receive a prize of 2000€, with the entry published in TC Cuadernos magazine, along with a one-year subscription to Arquitectura Viva Proyectos magazine, and exhibition at the Architecture School of Barcelona ETSAB.   Second prize is 600€,  and third place, 400€.

The submission deadline is January 31, 2011.
