In the PINK at the Hamburg Kennedy

In a prescient move just prior to Pantone Color Institute’s naming an intense honeysuckle pink its color for 2011, the Hamburg Kennedy Gallery on 36th Street in Manhattan has announced The PINK Collection.

It’s a sale of artwork dedicated to the color, with a portion of the proceeds to go to the Cancer Research Institute and http://www.cancer101.org/.

“The exhibition is virtual only,” said Marla Hamburg Kennedy, curator of the show.  “I wanted to include the broadest scope of artists from various media, and from all price points, with work starting at $400 going up to $85,000.  I wanted to include blue chip artists like Andy Warhol, Yayoi Kusama, Anselm Reyle, with younger artists such as Theo Anderson, and Andrea David Drebin.”

She spent a month culling through more than 1,000 images in her collection amassed during 30 years in the field of art advisory.  Her final list is comprised of approximately 110 images. “They’re all equally interesting for different reasons, and all really interact well with one another,” she said.

The Cancer Research Institute is dedicated to finding novel ways to harness the power of immune systems to conquer cancer.  The Institute fulfills its mission by providing academic researchers at top institutions around the world the funding they need to carry out their work.

CANCER101’s mission is to help patients and caregivers get organized and informed to fight their cancer.  Its planners in 50 states are provided free of charge to patients and provide essential organizational tools and important resources to empower patients and caregivers to take control over their diagnosis from the time they learn they have cancer through the next ten years of follow-up care.

Marla’s organized the show for two personal reasons.  “I’ve always wanted to put on a PINK show because pink is my favorite color and I’m very much aligned with charities that money for cancer,” she said.  “This came about as an impromptu idea after I held a benefit for a friend who started Cancer101.  I also wanted to think about an exciting visual means to reach people.”
