In Lecce, Terracotta and Majolica by Coli

In February, A+A was the guest of the Italian Trade Council for a tour of the architecture and artisans of Southern Italy. Among them was the Coli family in Cutrofiano near Lecce, on the heel of the boot of Italy. For generations, they’ve been designing and producing terracotta and majolica from designs that date back to the 17th century. We asked Luigi Coli for a few words on his company and its products, via email – and he happily obliged us:

Tell us about the company:
We divided the production of our company into four categories: tableware (dishes, pitchers, glasses, everything for the table and the kitchen), fire
pans, furniture (lamps, umbrella holders, furnishing objects) and garden furniture (vases, amphorae, for plants).

The designer?
The designer is Luigi Colì who, after having made the drawings, makes them perform to their collaborators according to whether it is a new decoration (to the decorators) or a new object (to the potter). Company design has always been based on the production of objects related to
the territory but with reinterpretations in form and decoration because we do not like to forget our roots and origins.

What’s up and coming?
For some years we have started a more innovative design for all four production categories that we started to show at the My Plant & Garden Fair and we will continue at the next Homi Fair also because until now the reference market has been the national one. But through the fairs and in various B2B meetings in which the company participated obtaining good appreciation for the products presented, we have the hope to enter new markets.

In 2018 we presented the Mare Nostrum line and furnishing items such as cup lamps. In 2019 we will present two other tableware lines. We are designing new furniture items specifically for hanging clothes, bar table for the next Salone del Mobile.
