In Phuket, a new southwest-facing home by KplusK Associates of Hong Kong offers panoramic views over the Andaman Sea, Phuket Bay, Koh Rang Yai and Koh Maprao. It’s a minimalist design that brings indoors and outdoors together – one of A+A’s favorite themes. We recently interviewed the architect’s representatives via email:
What’s unusual about the site for this project?
Cap Yamu, situated on Phuket’s east coast, is a KplusK master-planned and designed development of individually crafted contemporary villas. Each residence is sited on a complex and steeply sloping site.
What about the site drove the design?
Maximising the stunning views of the Andaman Sea, Phuket Bay, Koh Rang Yai and Koh Maprao.
The villa is constructed with large areas of sliding glass doors creating a seamless connection between outdoor and indoor spaces. Fully automated (remote controlled) rollers/blinds allow each room to maximize views to the sea and sky while protecting the interiors from the intensity of the sun.
What kinds of materials were used? Did they relate back to the site? How?
Indigenous materials were used with the intention to integrate the building with the tropical landscape making it blend naturally with the habitat.
The floors are made of crystal white marble in the public areas and of white oak in the bedrooms. High doors provide a sense of space as you connect from room to room.
What was the intent of the design?
As the architects themselves put it, “The definition of the villa is light; the relationship of the architecture with sun, sea and sky is intense.”
Where did you find you inspiration for the design?
The interior design takes its inspiration from the natural surroundings and the exceptional taste and craftsmanship from south-East Asia. The design elements blend naturally with the habitat.
A large part of the furniture has been designed specifically for the property and manufactured by renowned craftsmen and designers from the Philippines. Mother-of0pearl inlays adorn many of the designer furniture and customized bathroom cabinets.
Custom made carpets have been hand made in Nepal specifically for the villa. Paintings & sculptures have been sourced in Thailand, Bali, Java and the Philippines.
