It started with Christina Warner’s love for a drawing – a 1923 Kandinsky work of India-ink-on-paper.
“It incorporates his radical themes about the minimalist use of lines and the different forms of color representing different emotions,” the auction organizer at Artnet Auctions says. “He incorporated both here.”
Before long, her passion had grown into a collection of 45 pieces – paintings, prints, objects and design – culled from collectors, consigners and galleries.
It’s all being auctioned online now, and billed as “Bauhaus in the Balance.” Estimated values range from $1,500 to more than $200,000.
There are chairs by Le Corbusier and Breuer, a handle by Gropius, beaucoup works in color by Albers, as well as paintings, watercolors and photography by others from the legendary pre-war design institution. Ten of the artists represented are well-known, while 20 others may be less so.
“It’s a way to introduce them to a market where they’ve not been exposed, in a way that’s as engaging as it is academic,” says the senior specialist, modern & contemporary art at Artnet Auctions.
Most of the works date from 1925 until 1970, so they follow the careers of the masters after the school closed in 1933. And they include more than just art.
“Artnet has never done this kind of theme before in terms of the time period,” she says. “We’re now able to include design, to see how it will be received – to merge different disciplines like photography, fine art and design, all in one sale.”
Those looking for works on paper will find design objects, and vice-versa, she says.
But they may have to hurry: the auction turns into a pumpkin on Monday, April 15 at 1:00 PM.
