Originally designed by an uber-chic Holly Hunt, the Banyan Collection has undergone a deep-seated expansion into outdoor sectional furniture.
Link Design Systems founder Gene Freeland says that Hunt wanted clean, classic lines, and comfort in which to languish.
He’s kept all that in his line-up of 12 sectional pieces that can be assembled in a variety of ways.
It’s the oversized comfort that’s key, though.
“We made it bigger — the corner section is 48 by 48 inches. It’s huge – you could almost call it a sectional day bed,” he says. “Our sales guy is six-foot-six and he loves it — it’s a perfect size even for him.”
Banyan’s solid as a rock, too. Each piece is built out of a single piece of teak, grown on a sustainable plantation in Southeast Asia, where trees are constantly re-planted.
“It’s hard for the factories to get those big pieces of teak, but we didn’t want to glue together a lot of smaller pieces,” he says. “The end result is really beautiful, high quality teak furniture.”
The cushions are resistant to stains, mildew and weather, and the fabric is 100 percent solution-dyed acrylic. “The sun won’t fade it because the color goes all the way through the material,” he says.
Freeland calls it outdoor furniture, but it also works in those transitional areas between indoors and out, like patios or areas where big doors open up wide to the outside.
Its price points vary. “They’re in the high-end outdoor market, but still 20 percent less than our competitors,” he says. “It’s good value but not inexpensive.”
But mostly, it’s about luxurious comfort.
“You can really crawl into it,” he says.
With the distinct possibility of not resurfacing for hours.
