At New Ravenna, Glass Mosaics to Celebrate the Natural World

New Ravenna, one of A+A’s favorite artisan groups, recently introduced a collection of three one-of-a-kind mosaics to celebrate the natural world. These hand-crafted products have been created in jewel glass for vertical installations, and we were pleased to interview Sarah Nottingham, director of marketing and business development about them recently via email:

What’s the background on this new collection?

New Ravenna designed this collection, Reverie, to celebrate the natural world.

The material palette?

Using our jewel glass, we were able to take the vibrancy of color from that material and create three stunning patterns. We pride ourselves on creating highly detailed works of art, and these functional pieces of artwork can elevate any space in your home.

The inspiration for their design?

Midnight Floral was inspired by Dutch still-life paintings of the 17th century. The deep black background with its absence of light allows the floral elements to appear illuminated. Each leaf and flower in the design was collected locally, dried, and photographed to achieve photorealism in the mosaic. Our team chose to show this as a stunning bathroom wall and our jewel glass material would be appropriate for any wall application, to include kitchens, baths and even outdoor spaces.

Daybreak was inspired by the glowing skies in the stained-glass masterpieces of Louis Comfort Tiffany. The luminosity and gracious movement of the Tiffany glass was created using the mosaic techniques of subtle color blending and andamento. We have created a large panel of this pattern and framed it to showcase the artwork in our studio in Exmore, Virginia.

Canopy is a study in chiaroscuro. A fiscus elastica was photographed to create an abstract interpretation of the familiar house plant. The plant was back lit to create shadows with the leaves. By eliminating all color, the focus of the mosaic is on the interplay between positive and negative shapes created by the structure of the plant. Showcasing this panel as a spa installation allows the calmness of the neutral tones to shine.

The target market?

For those homeowners who see their home as a canvas, every mosaic we create is a one-of-a-kind work of art that is meant to be lived with and admired each day.
