In Newport, ‘Radiance’ by Ally Coulter

If you’re going to spend your summers in Newport, you might as well do it in style.

On the water.  With a view of the Bristol Bridge.  And in a home with interiors by Ally Coulter, fresh from designing “60th on Fifth,” Forbes magazine’s private club in Manhattan.

The home is actually minutes away from town, in The Newport Beach Club, the newest addition to Carnegie Abbey.  It’s a classic New England seaside village now being built on 150 acres of pristine waterfront facing the Narragansett Bay on Aquidneck Island.

Called “Radiance,” the home was designed by the Newport Collaborative Architects.  Coulter, formerly with Ralph Lauren Home but on her own for the past 20 years, turned to that look for the new residence.

“I love the aesthetic and design,” she says.  “It’s the epitome of style and grace.”

She was inspired by Newport itself, with its white linens and wicker, and its ocean, sand and sky.  “It’s a classic mix of linens and a little silk for luxury and cashmere for comfort,” she says.  “There are sea grass rugs, silk rugs in the master suites and cotton dhurries in the dining room – you could have a formal dinner, but if you wanted to sit around the deck in flip-flops, you could have that as well.”

She’s decorated the home with photographs from Robert Farber’s book, “By the Sea.” Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis brought him into Doubleday to publish the book, which won an Art Director’s Award for color photography.  Artwork by local painters and sculptors, including Newport’s own Jessica Hagen, is also on display.

It is an ideal summer retreat, Coulter says, especially for children.  “They can ride horses, play tennis or golf, and then go into Newport and enjoy the arcade or some ice cream, all in one day,” she says.  “Families come back every summer – it truly has everything.”

Now it has a 4,020 square-foot home with interiors by Ally Coulter, on the market for $2.8 million.
