For the record, Thais Fontenelle believes in understanding the difference between art and design.

“A design piece actually has to have a function,” the creator of Inventory design collaborative in Miami says.

To prove her point, she’s invited 11 designers and artists to display their work in “Inventory 02: Soul Does Matter,” scheduled to run concurrently with Design Miami and Art Basel: Miami Beach from Nov. 26 to Dec. 4.

The show will be in the Buena Vista Building in the heart of Miami’s Design District.  Each piece on display will be a low-production, limited edition work that’s ready to be produced.

“We’ve got 11 pieces by 11 artists, with some multiples of the same piece,” she said.

The show’s intent is to explore themes centered on the interplay between the material and the intangible personality of design objects. The highly disparate pieces in the show reflect the unique visions and worldviews of their respective designers,but still unify around the shared theme.

Among the artists represented are Jacob Brillhart , Chen Chen/Kai Williams, Paul Clemence, Paul Kopkau, Lemon Yellow, LMNOQ, Berge Malikian, Mr. O, Ernesto Oroza/Gean Moreno, Luis Pons and Michelle Weinberg, with special guest George Sanchez Calderon of Tomorrowland.

“Together they represent wildly different points of view and design sensibilities, that when brought together, create a cohesive, exciting and whimsical environment to experience,” she said.
