A Pied a Terre at the W Hollywood

Here we have the ultimate crash pad for the Malibu beach dweller who’s come to Hollywood for the weekend.

It’s a penthouse on the 12th floor of the Residences at W, next door to the W Hotel, and it’s been designed by Christopher Grubb.

From its balcony, views of the Pacific beckon. But inside it’s cool and calm.

“Part of the inspiration came from the rug, with its taupes, grays and blacks,” Grubb says. “It’s a color palette even though it’s made of neutrals and grays – I wanted a calm with grays, so you feel the color, enveloped in warmth and calm.

On the living room wall is a mural – an homage to the skyline of downtown Los Angeles.  A structural column is wrapped in Balinese seashells. Over the bar, to add pops of color, hang three glass pendants, hand-blown by Caleb Siemon and purchased from Lightopia.

“They’re both lighting and decoration, in greens, blues, turquoise and orange,” he says.

The idea was to create a show space in the condominium complex that’s hip and appealing to a wide age range.  It’s for anyone from their thirties into their sixties, though Grubb says he’s got clients in their seventies who are certain get a kick out of it.

“You can use your Wi, invite people in for poker parties, and there’s always the putting green up above Hollywood Boulevard,” he says. “It’s a place to come in and play with your friends for a fun experience.”

Unit 12G is 1,400 square feet, and priced at $1 million, substantially less than its larger sibling on the 15th floor, which at 20,000 square feet, is fetching $40 million.

“This felt like a loft to me,” he says. “It’s now, it’s in the moment, and it’s contemporary.”

And it’s all Hollywood.
